VENEERS: YOUR INSTANT SMILE TRANSFORMATION
Are you tired of trying to whiten your teeth without luck? Can you see the visible wear and tear on your smile, the dulled appearance, damage or discoloration of one or more teeth? Veneers are an almost instantaneous way to transform your smile and self-esteem for a more beautiful appearance overall.
WHAT ARE VENEERS?
Made from beautiful ceramic or porcelain, veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to the front of the teeth and are ideal for covering up chips, fractures, discolorations, or small spaces between teeth for a more symmetrical, youthful and beautiful appearance. Veneers are specially made to in fit your teeth, with the size, shape, color and length carefully adjusted to give you a natural-looking and luminous smile.
AT RESTORE HEALTH DENTISTRY, VENEERS ARE USED TO FIX:
- Teeth with gaps in between them (no braces needed!)
- Teeth with heavy stains, or permanent discolorations
- Teeth that are chipped, broken or worn down
- Teeth that are uneven, or irregularly shaped (veneers are an excellent option for creating balance when adjacent teeth are uneven lengths)
- Teeth that have surface imperfections (such as craters or bulges)
Patients often choose veneers for treatment in cosmetic dentistry for their many benefits, such as instant smile transformation to restore chipped teeth or a misshapen tooth, or to act as a permanent method of teeth whitening when regular teeth whitening is not sufficient. Whatever your reason may be, our team at Restore Health Dentistry will partner with you to create your best smile with your comfort in mind.
WHAT IS THE VENEERS PROCESS LIKE?
The first step in achieving your new smile with veneers is to have a consultation with Dr. William, where you can discuss your smile goals and the results you want to achieve. If you decide that veneers are the right option for you – then on to step two!
At your second appointment, a thin portion of the treated tooth’s enamel will be removed and an impression will be made. Once the impression is sent to the laboratory it will be one to two weeks before your custom-made veneers are ready. At your third appointment, the veneers will be resized and shaped again before being permanently bonded to your teeth.
VENEERS VS. CROWNS: UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE
Veneers are a durable and aesthetically-pleasing alternative to crowns, and are a great option for patients looking for a conservative treatment, as they generally require less shaping prior to the procedure than dental crowns.
DO VENEERS RUIN YOUR TEETH?
No, porcelain veneers do not ruin your teeth or harm them in any way. What most people are concerned about when they hear about veneers is the preparation of the teeth receiving the veneers. We indeed need to remove a small amount of enamel (.5 mm to be exact) before bonding your veneers.
This is done because the porcelain veneers are .5 mm thick. By filing this amount of enamel off of your teeth, the veneers will not stick out and it also helps the adhesive properly bond to the tooth. Though we are removing a part of your natural tooth, the veneers adhere to the teeth so strongly that they become one.
This provides a stronger tooth than your natural enamel. The veneers protect your teeth from damage and they are also stain-resistant. Be aware that decay can form underneath the veneers if you do not practice good oral hygiene so make sure you take care of them like you would your normal teeth.
HOW WE MATCH VENEERS TO YOUR TEETH COLOR
After we prepare your teeth, we will use a shade guide to match the veneers to the color of your teeth. We will also take impressions of your mouth and send this info to the dental lab that fabricates your veneers.
The exact shade, shape, and size of your teeth, as well a how your bite fits together can be used to create veneers that perfectly cover your teeth. If you would like your veneers to appear whiter than your natural teeth, we recommend that you undergo teeth whitening before receiving your veneers.
This is the most accurate way to choose the proper shade. At the dental office, we will present you a shade guide and you can carefully select what shade you want your veneers to be. You should be careful not to choose a shade that is too unnaturally white which is why we recommend getting a whitening treatment done first and then matching the veneers to that color.
HOW LONG DO VENEERS LAST?
Porcelain veneers last for up to 15 years, which is much longer than composite resin veneers. This is because porcelain is a much more durable and longer-lasting material. Composite resin easily chips, cracks, or becomes damaged, which is why it only lasts for 4-8 years. Porcelain veneers are also stain-resistant, unlike composite resin.
While porcelain is a much more durable material that is more resistant to stains than your natural teeth, you still need to take care of them and protect them from damage. Practice proper oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
Only use a soft-bristle toothbrush as anything harder is too abrasive. Floss once a day and wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth. Avoid damaging or wearing down the veneers by avoiding using your teeth to chew on ice, hard foods, or open things.
Do not smoke with veneers as this can cause discoloration over time. Getting regular dental cleanings every 6 months will remove surface stains and plaque and checkups will detect signs of decay early.
